I was born in Linden, Texas of the year 1868. My parents knew that i had a talent for music and at a young age i was playing the banjo. Soon after that I started picking up how to play the piano. By the time I was eleven I had a mentor named Julius Weiss who taught me the finer points of music. Around 1890 I developed a new type of music called ragtime. After years of traveling through the Midwest I finally settled down in St. Lous.
In the late 1890's, I was working at the Maple Leaf Club in Sedalia when I came up with one of the best songs I've written called the Maple Leaf Rag. A couple years later I wrote another famous song called The Entertainer. So far I have created a total of sixty compositions in my career. Once I moved to New York I created the first ever opera by an African American and I called it Treemonisha. Unfortunately, any public recognition for my music didn't come until long after I had passed away. My name is Scott Joplin and I am the King of Ragtime music and I encourage anyone to give me feedback on any of my musical compositions.
